I need good money saving tips or resources?
I’m paring down expenses and need some good ideas for real savings and some organization in that area. One of the biggest expenses, I think, is food. Organizing a menu and grocery expenses is extremely overwhelming to me. What’s the best way to make sure I’m not buying things I don’t need, not wasting food, the best way to utilize coupons in conjunction with a menu and taking advantage of savings available and working a budget. I need, like, step by step. Where do I start?
Food is our biggest expense.
1. Don’t buy prepared foods
2. No cokes or anything in cans –
water, tea or recession juice (walmart koolaid)
3. Never, ever go out to eat – no fast food – no restaurants
4. Make the kids lunch boxes.
5. Buy non brand chips for your kids.
6. Make your weekly menu – a lot of moms do this – they just keep it a secret.
I keep a chalboard of things I need to buy in my kitchen.
When I use something out of the pantry – I write it down.
I never go to the grocery store without a list.
And never buy anything that is not on that list.

It’s not that hard to tell a "want" from a "need".
If you only buy what you "need" you will save money.

Good Morning, I agree with Judy. Also another way to save it to go to your Save-O-Lots, Aldi’s or any type of discount warehouse foods. You can save a lot on your grocery bills. When we were have financial problems I use to shop there all the time and I even go there now. Some of the discount places have name brand items for less than Wal-Mart sells them for. Another thing is to buy in bulk and repackage your food into servings for thoes meals. Hope this helps you out.

We have flyer’s delivered to the house every week. My Helen sits down and goes through the flyer’s and plans an "in general" menus for the week. She clips coupons for the goods she wants and takes note of what’s on sale. The stores we use also have flyer’s on line, she goes through these and prints out what she wants there. She basically has a list plus coupons when she goes to the stores. Check with your stores, some of them accept coupons even for goods you haven’t purchased. That is like free money.:)
There are some things we use all year say like tomato soup or canned mushrooms or maybe a can of beans. I guess you call these items "staples".These things we buy when they come on sale but, we’ll buy a whole case at a time. The first case is the hardest to buy but, every case you buy frees up money for the next weeks purchases. How’s that work?? Well, you no that your going to start buying by the case so, you’ve started saving a little money in a jar at home, you’ve now got enough saved for a case of something. Every week you go to the store and buy a can of tomato soup for say a dollar. It comes on sale for 50 cents a can, you buy a case.Next week say you have a 100. grocery budget well, because you don’t have to buy the soup, you only spend 99. and you put the dollar is the jar.Buy another case of something different, 2 dollars a week in the jar. After a while you can buy a case anytime you want and you’ll find money in the jar to pay off other bills or put into savings, ect.
Take a calculator with you when you shop. Sometime you find the same goods in 2 or 3 different size containers. Divide the price by the volume of the container to see which is the better buy, surprisingly sometimes you’ll find it may be cheaper to buy 2 small cans rather than 1 large.
We do still do some impulse buying but the list helps slow impulse buying down.
You have to make it a game, it’s fun to save money.

I always sit down Sunday afternoon and look at the new weekly flyers and match up coupons with things that are on sale that week. Stocking up when things are on sale is the best plan that way you can go a week or two without getting a lot of groceries. I have a hard time making up a weekly schedule I go by what are family is doing on a particular night and go by that. If there isn’t much time for supper we have soup/salad and sandwich. If I’m going to be busy that day pull out the slow cooker and put supper in that. If everyone is going to be home and I’m not busy it’s a fussier meal. Fridays are always pizza and family movie night. My husband/kids actually get mad at me now when I try to make something else that night. We buy all our meat from the local butcher shop and fill our freezer with that. The only meat I buy from the grocery store is chicken and brats/hotdogs. Meat is very expensive at the grocery stores. Hope this helps and good luck!
